The story began in 1970, when, at just 18 years old, Vasile Mare first walked through the gates of the Hora musical instrument factory in Reghin. After completing vocational school and continuing his education through evening high school, the young man passionate about wood and music embarked on a journey that would last a lifetime. From 1982, the master devoted himself entirely to crafting master instruments, refining his technique and developing his own distinctive style.

Materials and the Creative Process

The instruments are crafted from the highest quality local wood:

Resonance spruce for the instrument tops
Curly maple for the back, neck and ribs
Ebony and rosewood (imported from India) for fittings

An essential aspect of the superior quality of the instruments is the natural wood drying process, which lasts a minimum of 15 years. Only after this period is the wood ready to be transformed into an instrument that will resonate perfectly.

International Recognition

Instrumentele create de Maestrul Vasile Mare are valued and sought after by professional musicians worldwide, being present in Romania, Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland and Austria. The exceptional quality and unique sonority of each instrument have made the workshop a benchmark name in European luthiery.

Throughout his remarkable career, master Mare Vasile has built over 500 instruments (over 300 violins, 100 violas and 50 cellos) which are played today around the world – from concert halls in Europe to America. His instruments have participated in prestigious international competitions, such as the Mittenwald competition in Germany (2001), where one of his violins was ranked in the top 30 worldwide.

Fiecare instrument creat de Maestrul Vasile Mare comes with a certificate of authenticity containing a detailed description of the instrument and colour photographs, guaranteeing the provenance and quality of the work.

The Tradition Continues

Maestrul Vasile Mare este membru fondator al the Association of Luthier Artists of Romania (founded in 1990) and is part of a family of luthiers who carry on the tradition. His son, Mare Aurelian, and his grandson, Mare Claudiu, learned the art of luthiery in his workshop and have become prestigious luthiers in their own right, awarded at international competitions.
